This weekend saw 3 SBVC teams compete in their 4th Mandatory tournament of the SCVA season. On Saturday the 14’s took to the court, with the 14 Blue leading the way with an undefeated record in pool play, sweeping each of the 3 matches. They beat Mavericks 14-Black (25-21, 25-14), SDVBC 14-1 (25-19, 25-13), and SVVC 14-Lisa (26-24, 25-16). This put them in position to win a playoffs match and move back up to Division 2. The 14 Blue continued their dominance and swept the playoff match too, with a win over A4 Volley 14-Black (25-21, 25-17). Coach Jon Newton said, “Grace Matthews and Bella Johnson were go to players for us this weekend and took the lead on offense. While Brynn Sofro and Danielle La Grange did a good job with consistent attacking from the middle and solid blocking all day long. The team will move back up to Division 2 for their last Mandatory tournament next month, before preparing for the AAU Championships in late June.

The 14 White had a bit rougher of a day battling in Division 4. They lost their matches to OC Heat VBC 14-Issac (18-25, 21-25), Oaks VBC 14-1 (16-25, 25-22, 10-15), and T-Street 14-Doug (7-25, 17-25). Coach Steven Crossland said “our best match of the day was against the much more physical Oaks VBC.  We pushed them to a 3rd game, but couldn’t pull off the upset”. The team then entered the “death match” playoff against Rancho Valley 14-Select (27-29, 5-25) and after an overtime battle in game one, collapsed for the loss in a sweep in game 2. Coach Crossland said of the weekend, “It’s great for the team to be playing against this competition.  It will only make them stronger and properly prepare them for high school.  We certainly have some things to work on over the next few weeks and I look forward to unleashing this team in our next tournament.” The team will move back down to Division 5 for their last Mandatory of the season, which will also be their final tournament of the year.

On Sunday, the 16 Blue team stepped onto the court with an uphill battle to begin the day. Having lost a started to an injury in practice just days prior, the team also had the majority of the players on the team coming straight from their high school Prom the night before… Needless to say, while they stayed competitive in each match of the day, the team dropped all 3 pool play matches. They lost to Forza1 North 16-Asics (25-11, 25-20), SDVBC 16-1 (24-26, 20-25), and Sunshine 16-South Bay (20-25, 20-25). In the playoffs they battled to try to maintain their Division 2 status, but in the end lost a close match to Impact 16-Bryan (25-21, 24-26, 10-15). Coach Dillan Bennett said, “Abby Corpuz and Ally Mintzer stepped up in a big way this weekend. Abby played a new position, and contributed with several kills and aggressive serving, while Ally played her best tournament to date on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, as well as serving good passing teams off the court. It was great to see both girls step up when we needed them.” The team will move back to Division 3 for their next Mandatory tournament, and then be preparing for AAU Championships in late June.

This upcoming weekend will see the 12’s, 13’s and 15’s return to the court – this will be the final tournament of the season for the 12 Blue team.
